"Imagine someone centuries from now attempting to reconstruct the music of the present without ever having heard it. Timbres, textures, and musical components-- the auditory signifiers that, combined together, form a unique musical experience— indeed exist side by side, but the relationships between these autonomous elements are skewed and misremembered. Or: the auditory building blocks are all present, but The Manual used to assemble them was lost long ago, perhaps incinerated in World War III.

Enter Los Angeles-based producer [PHYSICS]'s composition “Random Water.” Heavily manipulated synthesizers, warm bass tones, faded percussion, and atmospheric washes of sound swirl around in the ear-- signifiers that trigger the listener's aural memory. And yet, as one attempts to grasp at the fleeting, transitory relationships between these elements, he or she struggles and ultimately fails to reconstruct any shred of the signified from these signifiers. Existing in the present rather than in some post-human future, music like this in fact rejects the notion of The Manual, instead forcing the listener to question his or her most fundamental assumptions about the nature of sound."
